Jane Anslow

Office Manager, Administration & Records

Jane previously worked in the Civil Service, initially in the National Statistics Office as an Executive Officer, leading a team of five clerical staff. On returning from a career break she started work in a local comprehensive school of approx. 800 pupils as School Librarian, combining this with the role of Assistant Examinations Officer. When the position of Examinations Officer fell vacant she was successful in applying for this job which entailed working with a number of different awarding bodies such as WJEC, AQA and Edexel to ensure all candidates were registered and their results recorded and distributed. As part of this role she was also Lead Invigilator which meant she had to train invigilators on a yearly basis and monitor all exams that were run in the school. She has recently started working with Maxim saying she wanted to compare how training was conducted in the world of work as opposed to academia. Her interests are travel, walking her Weimaraner dog, singing in two choirs (with Rose Dixey) and “retail therapy”.


John Etheridge

ILM, CIEH and Health & Safety

John has worked in the training field for over 30 years and is well known in the South Wales area for his knowledge and expertise. He has been a Regional Manager for the Government Skills Centres where he worked for 14 years and was responsible for the planning and control of 20 trainers, 3 support staff plus 2 sales personnel. On leaving the Skill Centres he became a freelance trainer, initially running his own business but is now an Associate Trainer who has helped Maxim for over nine years. He is qualified to deliver a range of ILM and Health & Safety qualifications and holds a National General Certificate in Safety & Health and is also accredited to deliver NEBOSH General Certificates. Some of his previous clients include the University of Glamorgan, Mid and West Wales Fire Authority, Coleg Gwent, Leckwith Engineering, Morriston Hospital and Ordnance Survey which shows how adaptable he is with his training solutions ensuring he meets the exact requirements of our clients.



David Gavan

HR Services

David worked for ten years at Stateside Foods Ltd as a main board director functionally responsible for HR, H & S, and Central Services. Stateside Foods is a very fast growing FMCG company supplying major multiple retailers. He handled restructuring, introduction of new shift and pay arrangements, contracts of employment, recruitment, retention, training, discipline and grievances, pay and other union negotiations and introduced many policies on matters as disparate as Equal Opportunities, whistle blowing, bribery etc. Prior to that he was at EEF Lancashire for twelve years where he  became Chief Executive. In the EEF he handled around 750 trade union negotiations (always acting for the employer) on a diverse range of issues including pay and conditions, factory closures and downsizing, pensions, individual and collective dismissals, business transfers etc. He also acted as employer representative in approx 500 employment tribunals including unfair dismissal, sex and race discrimination, wages act and breach of contract claims. He also provided advice to companies on all the above matters so as to ensure that business decisions were made properly and with as little exposure to risk as was possible.  He holds an Honours degree in Business. David describes himself as a football enthusiast and a Bolton fan, which he regards as mutually exclusive hobbies. He is a motor sport enthusiast who still drives in competitive motorsports – in the NW Formula Ford Championship, and will be doing so again this year.


Sally Strong

ILM & Management Development

Sally has over 10 years of training and consultancy experience delivering many bespoke events as well as numerous away days and team building events. Sally has experience of working with all sectors of the economy as well as managers and leaders from all levels. She is highly experienced in the identification of training needs, innovative design, interactive delivery and evaluation of various corporate training events. She ensures that her workshops are cutting edge, relevant and in some of her delivery uses new and innovative material from Florida State University. Sally started her career at the Office for National Statistics as a Business Manager responsible for a department of approx. 100 staff and soon moved into the training department as a training consultant working internally and across the government statistical service. She has worked as a Senior Leadership Trainer at Legal & General where she specialised in Coaching for High Performance, Customer Experience, Mentoring skills and MBTI team events. More recently spent 4 years as one of the Directors of a highly successful business services group which was in the Welsh Fast Growth 50 for the last 3 years. Her areas of specialism now include: Management, Leadership and Personal Development Programmes, Equality & Diversity,  Performance Management Systems , Negotiating & Influencing Skills , Executive Coaching and MBTI. She is an avid keep fit person, running classes in pilates, keep fit and cycling and is currently organising a charity cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End so she rarley has the chance to get bored.


Rose Dixey

ILM, Coaching &  Basic Skills

Rose is an ILM accredited coach who believes that people are an organisation’s greatest asset.  For the past 12 years she worked in the Education Sector, latterly for the Welsh Government, with a focus on improving the essential skills of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) in the workplace.  Having a background in manufacturing and customer service, Rose is able to advise employers, employer groups and other stakeholders on developing and delivering LLN programmes that are vocationally relevant, producing business benefits including improved quality and production efficiencies. As a coach, Rose has empowered individuals to make crucial choices and decisions in their work or home life and draws on the same expertise to develop leadership, problem solving skills and team building for organisations through Action Learning facilitation. She is actively involved in a choir, organising and appearing in many fund raising events over the past four years as well as helping to organise the annual tour.


Steve Kelly

ILM, Sales, Customer Services & Financial Services

Steve describes himself as an individual with intellect and self-motivation, a talented individual, (CIPD Training qualified) who demonstrates a proven track record and considerable success achieved within the Financial Services Industry. A high degree of flexibility and adaptability is displayed, utilising sound business acumen, innovation, initiative and financial expertise. He demonstrates a relaxed, natural approach to training/management/sales along with an ability to listen and understand to both team members and prospective customer’s requirements. He quickly identifies their needs and aspirations. This ability enables the provision of innovative and tailored interventions that exceed expectations, pushing the boundaries of personal development, team motivation and customer service thereby maximising company profitability. Steve is a UKCC Level 2 qualified Rugby Union Coach who represented Wales when he was (in his words) much younger.


Mike Bethune

Food Sector & Health & Safety

Mike has over 20 years of experience in the hospitality and catering industry initially working his way up the ladder from trainee chef to head chef. He went into management with Newport City Council as area Supervisor and Training Officer looking after 35 units and 250 staff and therefore has a good understanding of the needs of businesses as well as the requirements of the law. During this time Mike continued to extend his formal qualifications gaining a Certificate in Education and PGCE in HACCP.  He is committed to providing the best level of training and support to all course participants and frequently attends trainers’ seminars to ensure course content and teaching methods are relevant and regularly updated and in line with current Best Practice.  Mike describes his hobbies as collecting TV Sci-Fi  memorabilia, working on his allotment and last, but not least, spending time with his family.


Christine Kelly

ILM, Sales, Customer Services & Financial Services

Chris is a Financial Services specialist with over 30 years experience in sales, customer service, management and learning and development. She has a proven track record of success in coaching and developing managers, advisers and customer service staff. Chris has utilised her practical working experience to achieve considerable success with businesses in delivering measurable improvements in results. Driven by enthusiasm with a desire to add value, she has a pragmatic approach and a talent for managing change and winning hearts and minds. She demonstrates a straightforward yet relaxed delivery style, and leads by example through a positive, confident attitude, an ability to understand customers’ needs and high personal and customer service standards. Outside work, Chris is a member of a ladies’ skittles team and has recently started attending zumba classes in an effort to keep fit.  She also enjoys the “social” side of rugby union – watching, supporting and generally having a good time!


Heather Hughes

ILM & Management Development

With over 20 years of operational experience within customer service, sales and senior management.  Heather has developed a breadth of practical workplace knowledge.  She specialises in the design and delivery of management development, customer service and sales training.  She has personal experience in all areas of sales and has operated as a senior manager within a 350 seat Call Centre. More recently she has worked with a national training delivery business managing the training across six major British Gas call centres.


Leighton Davies

HR Services

Experienced Senior HR Manager with significant achievements gained over many years within change management and employee relations. Leighton’s HR expertise allows him to be comfortable in multi-sector, multi-scale organisations. He has operated at corporate level and can add his valuable experience to a smaller team environment. He is motivated by making a difference and adding real value to a company. He has significant experience in terms of site set-ups, such as LG (the largest inward investment ever secured in Wales) and managing significant change in established organisations including, Panasonic and Murco Petroleum. A well-known HR figure in South Wales, he is a strategic leader, team player, and HR expert, and is able to adopt a practical, hands-on, common-sense approach. His hobbies are fishing and especially rugby, being a keen follower of the Scarlets and Llanelli as well as Wales.


Terry Mould

Problem Solving, Key Skills, Engineering & NVQ Assessor/Verifier

Terry has over 40 years experience in mechanical engineering havng first class skills in areas such as Milling, Turning, Welding, Fitting, Grinding and Welding and has used these skills to both design and build racing cars for the track (which he drove himself) plus robots for television programmes such as the BBC’s Robot Wars (fans of the programme may remember Estron), winning the competition against rivals such as the Army, Navy and renowned Universities. He has always believed training is the cornerstone to progress and is always interested in finding new ways to improve the knowledge base of others, striving to get them into a better position to be able to be more productive and giving them the ability to solve problems at source by utilising their own initiative. He is a fully qualified NVQ Assessor and Verifier as well as an active hands on trainer. He has been described by customers as being “an old school engineer, a real craftsman who can turn his hand to anything and produce results”.


Jacqui Turner

ILM & Customer Service Skills

Jacqui has enjoyed a very successful career working for two of the UK’s largest banking organisations and more recently in the Utilities industry. She began her career working within an Insurance contact centre, developing her customer service and communication skills, before progressing into Managerial and Training roles. Jacqui is a friendly and energetic individual who has a proven ability to analyse training needs and design and deliver innovative and high quality bespoke classroom based and E Learning courses, which are responsive to the diverse needs of organisations. With many Management and Training successes over 20 years, Jacqui’s specialisations include Customer Service, Communication, Coaching skills, Management development and Sales training. Her passion lies in developing individuals to achieve their potential, with the capability to engage and inspire others to achieve great results.


Liza Carr

HR Services

Liza has lived in South Wales all her life, and has worked with companies across that area providing the level of expertise and practical support that larger organisations enjoy from in-house HR specialists. She is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development, has a BSc (Hons) in Business and Finance and a Level 3 qualification from the Institute of Leadership and Management along with twenty years’ HR experience.  She started her training and personnel roles in the public sector before moving into the Financial Services industry to assist in establishing and running an in-house HR department for a start-up company which grew to 250 employees. She has also helped set up a HR department for a new company which involved recruiting employees, overseeing contracts of employment, writing employee handbooks and developing HR processes. Liza describes herself as experienced in all aspects of HR. Most of her spare time is spent with her young family and helping her partner to develop his own business.


Stuart Hooper

Lean, Six Sigma, NVQ Assessor, IT, ILM & Food Sector

Stuart has a wealth of experience in the field of Best Practice having worked for companies such as GE, Sony, Sunjuice and Rivermill. He is an accredited Six Sigma Black Belt, holds Business Improvement Techniques qualifications and Lean Practitioner status. His many business improvement projects have yielded Improved Service Levels of Morrison’s from 97 to 99.7%; Tesco Bakery from  96% to 99%, set up a Forecaster / Demand Planner to track stock and suggested next order quantities/Min/Max Stock of FMCG Goods, set up of Management Information / Business Information system from scratch while employed at Sunjuice, Implemented the Harford Management System that measures all sku specific attributes (ie use by date / bar codes) to stop rejects leaving the business. (The system also measured overfill by sku.), helped implement OEE with Divisional Operations Manager and created the system, process and training which helped to control of Yields Analysis for the site, a reduction of Yield Losses by 44%, a reduction of Warranty Costs by 40% and a reduction of Market Defect Rate by 73%. Stuart lists his many interests as running, triathlon, rugby, football, golf, and walking


Wayne Morris

Performance Improvement, Change and Project Management

Wayne, a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, has a Masters degree in Manager and Organisation Development and has spent the majority of his career implementing and managing change, and performance improvements.  He is both a certified PRINCE2® and MSP® Practitioner, having managed projects and programmes in both the private and public sectors while working for AXA plc, HM Customs and Excise, and Royal Mail Group.  Wayne’s experience has included introducing new technology and machinery, running a national programme to ensure that Royal Mail’s equipment was PUWER compliant and in the development and implementation of new ways of working.  In addition, he has designed and rolled out of a number of performance improvement initiatives across the UK based upon Lean, OEE, TPM, and Process mapping and improvement. He has spent time in Belgium and Switzerland developing and sharing best practice as a subject matter expert on logistics and postal industry automation.  During his career, Wayne has designed and delivered national communications and training materials and programmes and has been a key note speaker at international events.  Wayne has held senior management positions including Mail Centre Manager (with 750 staff) and Territory Processing Performance Manager (for 23 sites).  Wayne has worked with a variety of businesses and public and third sector organisations solving problems, implementing change and improving performance.  In his spare time, Wayne is a Senior Marshal on golf’s PGA European Tour and has worked at three Ryder Cups and the 2008 US Open.


Simon Deacy O.B.E.

Performance Improvement and Change Management

Simon is a former police Chief Superintendent and from 2004 to 2010, he headed a major programme of change in the UK Criminal Justice System – funded through HM Treasury’s Invest to Save Fund – to improve victim and witness care and the efficiency of the courts. As part of the ‘No Witness No Justice’ programme, involving the introduction of 168 Witness Care Units and the employment of 1700 staff, Simon designed and delivered a number of training and communication programmes which were recognised as world class, and his video, ‘More Porridge’, won second place in the Silver Screen Awards in the USA. In recognition of his work in delivering significant improvements for victims and witnesses across the UK’s 43 Police Forces, he was awarded the OBE in 2011. He has obtained both BSc and MSc qualifications in his spare time during a thirty-year police career. As a subject matter expert, Simon has undertaken international keynote speaker assignments and Government advisor roles across the world, including the introduction of witness care in Chile and Bermuda, and his on-going work supporting the modernisation of the Criminal Justice System in the Bahamas. Simon undertakes these specialist criminal justice assignments alongside his work supporting organisations in the implementation of change and in performance improvement activity.  In his spare time, Simon is a School Governor and is the Head Coach at Little Kickers in Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire, providing football coaching to 2 to 7 year old children.


Roger Jones

Lean & Leadership Trainer and NVQ Assessor/Verifier

Roger is a mature, confident and highly committed individual with extensive experience of a Lean Manufacturing environment. He’s had a long and successful career with Lucas Industries / Meritor that saw him rise to the position of Manufacturing Manager. During that time he was heavily involved in the introduction of Total Quality and Lean Manufacturing principles and techniques. Since taking the offer of an early retirement package he has been an office manager for an Insurance Services business and until recently was the General Manager of a Training Services provider. He has considerable experience of delivering NVQ, VRQ and commercial  training with a range of companies . He is also an accredited EAL Assessor and Verifier . Roger has a proven ability to train and coach individuals and groups to achieve various objectives through his interpersonal skills, support and an outgoing and friendly disposition. His areas of expertise include Business  Improvement Techniques, Team Leading, Management and Performing Engineering and Manufacturing Operations to Level 3 standard.


Cath James

ILM & Management Development

Cath is both a HR and Training professional with 16 years experience in the industry. Cath developed her skills in both these areas with Lloyds TSB, delivering dynamic and diverse HR and Training solutions across the group at both an operational and strategic level. Her specialism is Leadership and Management Development, although in recent years  Cath has delivered at all levels across both Blue Chip and SME business environments. Cath is passionate about the end result – effectively coaching managers to develop their performance and improve business capability and sustainability. Cath has worked at a Senior Management  level in both HR and Training in the Financial, Call Centre, Automotive and Training sectors which gives her a significant level of Occupational Competency within business, aswell as highly tuned and effective development skills. Cath is expert in the fields of Training Needs Analysis, Training Design, Implementation and Delivery, Project led Learning Solutions, Transformational Change, HR Consultancy including Recruitment and Retention, Business Improvement and Customer Services. Cath also designs and delivers ILM accredited learning solutions and is a highly proficient Assessor and Internal Verifier for these qualifications.


Maggie Kotek-Howe

ILM & B-IT NVQ Assessor/Verifier

Maggie  is a self employed associate and Learning and Development Consultant whose clients have incliuded both the private and public sector. She developed originally from Asda Stores Ltd where she progressed to a Senior Management role within the Training Department and has experience in desiging, creation and delivery of bespoke training products that meet specific client needs. She has managed several teams and was actively involved in the Asda/Walmart transition, which involved recruitment, training and introduction of new working techniques onto the Company’s trading floor. She also has experience of creating specific solutions such as individual development programmes (involving assessment, TNA and progression to ensure objectives are met), obtaining government funding for qualifications such as ILM, B-IT NVQ’s, Retail and Customer Service plus Functional Skills. Maggie holds a degree in PGCE gained at Huddersfield University and is also a member of the CIPD. She is a learner focussed person and is passionate about helping people and organisations to develop their potential and reach their goals. She describes herself as organised, business focussed, reliable with a good sense of humour.


Dave Cartwright

Lean & Six Sigma, Project Management

Dave has worked in a range of engineering, operational management, quality and commercial roles within the extractive, chemical and manufacturing sectors.  He has over 15 years of consulting experience as both an internal and external change agent.  His primary specialisms include process improvement, production management, asset optimisation, supplier development and cost-down activities.  He is a highly experienced business improvement consultant who trains and leads teams to achieve significant cost and efficiency improvements.   His experience with process improvement frameworks such as Lean, Six Sigma, Change Management and Supply Chain Management has proved beneficial in a wide variety of sectors.  Dave has successfully managed Training and Consulting Programmes for Regional Development Organisations and global private sector “Blue-chips” in Wales and the Midlands.   He coaches Lean/CI Professionals at all levels in all sectors. Dave has successfully assisted more than 90 organisations as a consultant, including many small specific interventions at SMEs (for the Manufacturing Advisory Service) as well as on major multi-year transformation programmes and is able to effectively communicate and build strong working relationships with all levels of an organisational hierarchy. Areas where he has demonstrated expertise lie in being able to quickly understand and diagnose problems and then to develop appropriate solutions which he is able to lead implementation teams through to achieving a sustainable improvement. Companies that Dave has worked for include Bosch, BA Avionics and BA Interiors, Aero Engine Controls, New Boliden, Tara Mines Ireland, Corus,  Wartsila Findland and Butlers Cheese.



Andy James

Health & Safety and Environmental Training

Andy began his career with Lucas Automotive at both their Pontypool and Cwmbran sites for atotal of 16 years. Andy has been involved in health and safety for over 18 years, starting at grass roots by becoming a union safety rep. for 8 years then acting as assembly safety officer for the business for five years. He has completed his NEBOSH qualifications as well as becoming a member of IOSH. He recently completed a contracting role as safety advisor to Rolls Royce military aircraft engine manufacturers in Bristol for nearly three years. During his time there he facilitated specialist training for over 200 people as well as delivering standard safety awareness sessions bringing the company’s training requirements up to date and helping the business through many audits . He also formed and ran the environmental team for the business which is now making reduction savings of over 150K. Andy describes himself as very friendly and very much a people person who connects well with all levels of staff no matter their status. He has government clearance to work in areas of national interest and has signed the official secrets act during his time at Rolls Royce. Andy has taken part in skydiving charity events for a hobby and formed the Arvin Meritor skydive team after getting involved with the sport for charity.  As an artist he enjoys oil painting and loves to travel to India and the United States.


Jan Smith

ILM, H & S, Food Sector & NVQ’s

A dynamic Training & Development Manager with a strong business and customer focus. Has experience of developing and successfully implementing health and safety, food safety and ILM programmes. Jan has 25 years of experience working in the private sectors and is an accredited trainer with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and undertakes continuous professional development on an annual basis. Jan covers a range of training that includes BRC HACCP, PTLLS Coaching, IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH General certificate, ILM Levels 2 & 3, Advanced Food Hygiene, CIEH Train the Trainer, CIEH Levels 2 – 4 in Food Safety, CIEH Health & Safety Levels 2 – 4, HACCP Level 3, Accident Investigation, Risk Assessment and Manual Handling Techniques. She is also a qualified NVQ Assessor.


Richard Thomas

ILM, Lean, Six Sigma & B-IT NVQ’s

Richard is qualified to deliever many different and varied types of training interventions. He holds the Certificate in Education (CertEd) and is a qualified trainer with experience of delivering units of the Business Improvement Techniques NVQ programme including Health & Safety, ILM courses such as Effective Team Member Skills, plus Six Sigma Yellow and Green Belt courses; He is also a registered trainer with the CIEH for PTLLS and Health and Safety L2 & 3. He is NEBOSH, NEBSM & HNC qualified, with 18 years experience of Shift Supervision and Management with a wide range of experience of the medium & light duty manufacturing industries, supplying demanding, worldwide customers, to strict delivery schedules and high quality standards.  Richard describes himself as self-motivated, able to work on own initiative and as part of a team. He has proven leadership skills which has involving communicating, managing, developing and motivating teams to achieve their key objectives and has good analytical, planning and communication skills. Experience of promoting a positive and safe culture and ‘Continuous Improvement’ environment, employing Lean techniques, to develop operational efficiency. He has been trained to both Lean Change Agent and Six Sigma Green Belt levels. He also enjoys elements of  DIY and has attained certificates in electrical wiring and bricklaying in his spare time. To this end he is currently undergoing  full renovation of his third home, having project managed the main construction work himself since 2007. He also enjoys gardening, dog walking, physical fitness and travel.



Melanie Smith

Change Management, Coaching & NLP

Melanie has over 16 years of consultancy, training and coaching experience and has worked from shop floor to Boardroom level.  She is a qualified business Psychologist and NLP  (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Master Practitioner and is able to deliver interventions that support individuals and organisations through periods of difficult change.  Melanie believes that most powerful change interventions are formed from ‘enlightening’ leaders about the impact of their behaviour at work on others and uncovering how they may get more beneficial and sustainable results by learning how they can understand and ‘read’ others more effectively. She started her career as a nurse in the NHS which has also given her a sound basis for the support she provides to many organisations regarding the monitoring and support of health and well being within the workplace.  She says her passion is enabling individuals to be the best they can be by helping them to become self-aware, adept at problem solving and to maintain a positive mental attitude at work. During her consultancy and change management career Melanie has worked with a diverse range of clients which includes such companies as Airbus, BAe, Thales Aerospace, the BBC, Cadbury Schweppes, Churchill Insurance, Eli Lilley, Marconi plc., the Competition Appeals Tribunal, Proximity (UK) and several County/ Borough Councils. Her areas of specialism includes Organisational and Change Management,  Management, Leadership and Personal Development Programmes, Executive Coaching,  Customer Service  (based on values), Team Building events and provision of personal feedback via an internationally recognised psychometric technique. She has only lived in the area for 18 months but is enjoying getting to know people in the local community, especially by doing voluntary work with the local Arts Festival initiative which is her main hobby and interest outside of work.



Deborah Burdett

Change Management, Coaching & NLP

Deborah spent many years working as a sales professional, having long been interested in the way that people act and respond to other people.  Her approach to sales is to act as a consultant, bringing about a win-win result for both parties. In 2005 she formed her own company running workshops, training, seminars and one to one coaching.  Her clients range from multinational blue chips to small family owned businesses and Deborah loves the variety that each new project brings. Deborah became interested in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and is now an NLP Master Practitioner.  She finds that NLP techniques are superb for enabling fast change and for facilitating those ‘light bulb’ moments that hugely assist progress.


Dave Bryce

ILM, Lean and B-IT NVQ’s

Dave is an experienced professional consultant / trainer with 14 years working as a business consultant and executive coach for a number of both public and private organizations. He worked for 4 years in a large International company who’s  head office was based in Los Angeles. Dave has experience in working within the Human Resources Department as a Training Manager focusing on the design and development of procedures and processes, design and delivery of internal training programmes, which were then cascaded to other facilities within the group. He previously was Head of Management development for a large private company working with and improving organisations through the development of their Management and Leadership skills in line with their business aspirations and goals.

Beryl Shaw

ILM, NVQ Assessment & Verification and Health & Safety

Beryl has 27 years experience in  learning and  development , sales and  business  improvement. She excels in supporting  businesses, teams and individuals to be the best that they can be.  Passionate about motivating others and leading by example,  she’s  bubbly and energetic , definitely an ideas person.   Naturally a great problem solver  with a can do attitude, she has a real knack in finding the right  solution for  the purpose. Beryl’s specialties include People Development and Leadership Skills, Training , Coaching & Mentoring, Operational Management, Business Improvement, Transformational Management and Recruitment and Selection.
